SPECIFIC CKD Heart & Kidney support has an exceptionally high content of omega-3 EPA and DHA fatty acids extracted from fish oil. In dogs with heart disease, EPA maintains body weight, improves appetite, regulates arrhythmia, blood pressure, and platelet aggregation. In dogs with renal insufficiency, omega 3 fatty acids help to slow the progression of insufficiency.
In congestive heart failure, sodium excretion is reduced, thus compensating for the decreased capacity of the heart, which results in sodium and fluid retention. Reduced sodium helps to break the vicious circle of water retention (hypertension and edema). This is essential for patients with kidney, liver and heart disease.
Limited phosphorus is necessary to prevent hyperphosphatemia and to slow the progression of renal insufficiency.
Reduced protein levels, along with highly bioavailable proteins, reduce azotemia in dogs with renal insufficiency. In dogs with hepatic impairment, this reduces the risk of hyperammonaemia and possible hepatic encephalopathy. Biologically valuable proteins provide the dog's body with a sufficient amount of essential amino acids.
Limited protein levels reduce the levels of oxalates, cystines and urates in the urine. This, together with the alkaline pH of the urine, prevents the formation of calcium oxalates, cystines and urate crystals in the urine. Potassium citrate also reduces the risk of calcium oxalate precipitation.
